Welcome/Introduction

Welcome to the blog for our journey to Ethiopia. We are a team of 21 people from Northern California who will be heading to Project Mercy in Butajira, Ethiopia on October 20, 2012. We will spend nearly 2 weeks serving the community of Project Mercy by staffing pediatric medical clinics, providing surgical services, developing educational support for the students of the Project Mercy school, delivering public health education, and improving the infrastructure of the Project Mercy facilities.

Far beyond our desire to help with the physical needs of the community, we most want to come alongside our extended family at Project Mercy and extend the healing touch and love of Christ to those living in proximity to Project Mercy. We hope to do this by caring for each person as a beloved child of God, developing relationships, and being authentic followers of Jesus as we treat, share knowledge and live life together. Our hope is that the community sees Christ in us and that we are the aroma of Him to those who do not know his peace and love.

Final Preparations...

Saturday, October 20, is 5 days away.  It's the day we get on a very big airplane and fly nearly halfway around the world to Ethiopia...

The sights, smells, landscape and people will not be familiar to many of us as we drive into Addis Ababa and on into Butajira.  However some things are universal as one looks through the differences: parents love their children, relationships are vital, everyone wants to be loved, and everyone needs to be loved.  It's true in Ethiopia, it's true in California.

We are a group of twenty-one people who have come together over the past several months, building relationships with each other, and discovering together the ways the Lord has called us to himself and is now sending us to Ethiopia.  We go to serve - the people of the Yetebon region as well as our faithful brothers and sisters at Project Mercy.

We want only to be who Christ would have us be, to love as He would have us love, teach as He would have us teach, learn what He would have us learn, and become who He wants us to be.

The lead-up to our departure is developing a deeper trust in the Lord for me as I must rely only on Him for the details.  It's uncomfortable, but good....
